Junior Interpreter Training, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, 2008
Challenge: Young part-time interpreters aged 10-16 required training but could not attend instructor-led classes. They only had a short time in which they could work (summer) and needed to hit the ground running.
Solution: I used an upside-down classroom model. The children were given a workbook and a CD containing multi-media e-learning modules created in Adobe Captivate1. When they successfully completed the evaluation in the CD, they were ready to enter the Historic Area and begin rehearsing their interpretations with the guidance of an adult Interpreter. Not long after, these young historians were chatting away with the guests of Colonial Williamsburg.
The kids loved the CD, and got up to speed so quickly! Great job, Andrea. -- Rene Hutton, Manager of Group Interpretation
